The Capital Region's congressional representatives are voicing their opinions following the U.S. and Israel's joint military strikes against Iran over the weekend. The operation, initiated by President Donald Trump, aims to counter Iran's nuclear ambitions. Elise Stefanik, the Republican Congresswoman from the 21st District, supports the strikes, emphasizing the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons that could threaten U.S. national security. Stefanik stated, "There is no decision more serious than military action to protect our national security and American lives."
Conversely, Paul Tonko, a Democrat representing the 20th District, criticized the strikes, arguing that President Trump is leading the country into an unjustified war. Tonko expressed on Facebook that Americans do not want another costly conflict in the Middle East and urged Congress to reconvene and vote on a war powers resolution to halt military operations.
Governor Kathy Hochul has not directly commented on the strikes but assured that the state is taking precautionary measures to protect New Yorkers. The New York State Police are increasing their presence at religious, diplomatic, and cultural sites across the state. Hochul emphasized vigilance, stating that while there are no specific threats, the state continues to monitor potential risks.
The strikes have sparked mixed reactions from local officials and citizens, with some supporting the military action as a necessary step to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran, while others fear it could lead to prolonged conflict. The situation remains tense as Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks, although the U.S. military reports minimal damage and no casualties.
