Cohoes High School is set to introduce metal detectors at its main entrance as part of a broader safety initiative, beginning full implementation on Monday, March 30. The new security screening system was previewed for students and staff this week, with practice sessions running through Friday, March 27, to help everyone get comfortable with the process.

According to Peggy O’Shea, superintendent of Cohoes City School District, all students and visitors will be required to pass through the metal detectors during school hours. If the scanner signals an alert, individuals will undergo a secondary screening, which could include a handheld scan or a bag check. The screening system is designed to detect weapons, vaping devices, hidden phones, and other prohibited items, as reported by CBS6 Albany.

Principal Laura Tarlo emphasized that the district’s priority is student safety and peace of mind. "We want to make sure that kids feel safe when they come to school, that they can focus on academics and learning, and not really worry about what could be coming in the building during the day," Tarlo said, according to CBS6 Albany. She also noted there is no data showing an increase in weapons at the school, but the new system is part of a proactive, layered approach to safety.

As part of the new routine, students will also lock their phones in Yondr pouches and place any metal items on a table before walking through the scanners. If needed, additional checks will be performed. The school is working to make students and families feel comfortable, with ongoing conversations and a focus on transparency.

An information night for families and caregivers was held Monday, March 23, offering a look at the new security system and a chance to ask questions, as outlined by NEWS10 ABC. The district plans to expand the use of these scanners to large after-school events and weekend activities in the future.

For more details, families are encouraged to consult the district’s Frequently Asked Questions or contact district leaders directly.
