Gas prices in the Albany area continue to rise sharply, with local drivers seeing little relief at the pump. According to the latest data from AAA, the state average for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $3.90 on Monday (March 24), nearly matching the national average of $3.98 reported the same day. In Albany, the average cost per gallon is just below this mark, reflecting a 23-cent jump from last week and an 89-cent increase compared to one month ago.
The upward trend is not unique to the region. As reported by AAA, gas prices are climbing nationwide as the spring equinox brings warmer weather and increased travel. Higher demand is a major factor, but experts also point to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which continue to push up crude oil prices. NEWS10 ABC cited GasBuddy’s Head of Petroleum Analysis, Patrick De Haan, who said that ‘consumers continue to feel the sting of rising oil, gasoline, and diesel costs as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain elevated, pushing gasoline prices to their highest levels in years.’
Additionally, the transition to summer-blend gasoline—which contains more expensive additives to help reduce evaporation in warmer months—contributes to the price hikes, according to AAA Hudson Valley. The agency notes that prices typically begin to fall in the autumn, but uncertainty from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has made it difficult to predict when relief might come for consumers.
Industry analysts do not expect prices to drop soon. GasBuddy stated that unless there is a meaningful resumption of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, ‘upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist.’
For now, Capital Region residents can expect to pay well above last month’s prices, with future relief remaining uncertain. For more details, visit the AAA New York gas prices page.
