Dr. Cecily Wilson-Turner was officially named the first female superintendent of the Shenendehowa Central School District during a board meeting on Tuesday (March 24) in Clifton Park, New York. The appointment comes nearly 10 months after Dr. Wilson-Turner began serving as interim superintendent, following the retirement of former superintendent L. Oliver Robinson, who led the district for 20 years, according to Spectrum News.
Dr. Wilson-Turner brings over 25 years of experience as an educator and is the first woman to hold the district’s top leadership role. Board President Deanna Stephenson said, "Dr. Wilson-Turner brings not only experience and vision, but a heart, such a big heart. Throughout this process, she has shown us her deep belief in students, her respect for educators and her understanding that strong schools are built through strong relationships." Stephenson added, "It matters because representation matters. It matters because it reflects the progress of our community," as reported by The Daily Gazette.
Dr. Wilson-Turner’s background includes teaching elementary school at her alma mater in Arbor Hill before moving into administrative roles in 2007. She stepped into the interim position last year and now leads more than 9,500 students in the district.
The search for a new superintendent was extensive, involving a survey, community forums, and input from hundreds of residents, students, and staff. The process, assisted by Lauren J. Gemmill, superintendent of Capital Region BOCES, focused on long-term planning, communication, transparency, and ensuring a well-rounded student experience.
Dr. Wilson-Turner’s term as superintendent is set to continue until June 2030. In her remarks Tuesday, she said, "It is with a great sense of honor and excitement that I officially assume the role of superintendent of schools for Shenendehowa Central School District. I carry forward the work of so many others to ensure that our commitment to excellence withstands the test of time through continuous actualization of our district mission and goals."
The district’s leadership transition marks a significant moment in its history, with board members and the community expressing optimism for the future under Dr. Wilson-Turner's guidance. For further details, see WNYT.
