A Troy man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted on eight counts for crashing his car into a Niskayuna AT&T store in 2022. The sentencing, delivered on Wednesday (March 25), follows a multi-day trial in Schenectady County during which Steven Carrion, 33, was found guilty of burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, and criminal contempt.
According to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office, Carrion drove his Mercedes through the front glass of the store at Mohawk Commons after being served a full stay-away order of protection against his ex-girlfriend, who worked there. Once inside, he used a baseball bat to destroy electronic displays and other inventory while searching for the woman, shouting "daddy’s home." Store security footage and 911 calls captured the incident, which ended without any reported injuries.
After the rampage, police found a kerosene can and three shotgun shells in Carrion’s car. A subsequent search of his Troy apartment revealed kerosene poured across the floor, a stove burner left on, and a fan running. The protection order, doused in kerosene and partially burned, was also discovered in his bedroom. Forensic tests confirmed Carrion's blood and DNA were on the baseball bat used during the incident, according to WNYT and the Daily Gazette.
The jury rejected Carrion’s defense that his actions were caused by madness and found him guilty after two and a half hours of deliberation. At sentencing, Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney described the act as "one of the most dangerous acts of domestic violence" prosecuted in the county, noting that it "mercifully did not end with serious injury or death," according to NEWS10.
Carrion will serve his sentences concurrently and must pay $80,020.66 in restitution to AT&T. A full order of protection was issued for the victim, effective for 14 years.
