A former Cohoes High School teacher, Drake Galarneau, is facing serious legal charges after being arraigned on Thursday (April 2) in Albany County Court. The 36-year-old, who previously taught ninth-grade English, pleaded not guilty to eight counts of third-degree rape and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. These charges stem from allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student under 17, which reportedly occurred between May and October 2025.
Galarneau resigned from his teaching position last month as the New York State Police investigated the allegations. He was released on $50,000 bail and is under a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with a no-contact order issued for the victim. Albany County Assistant District Attorney Alyssa Congdon argued for Galarneau to remain in jail, citing the seriousness of the charges, which could result in up to 32 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
The investigation began after a report was filed with Cohoes High School's principal, Laura Tarlo, on March 24. The school district's superintendent, Peggy O'Shea, confirmed that the administration immediately contacted State Police, leading to Galarneau's arrest. O'Shea emphasized the district's commitment to providing a safe learning environment and urged anyone with information to contact the authorities.
Galarneau's attorney, Joel Abelove, maintained that his client is not a flight risk, highlighting his cooperation with the investigation and his ties to the community. Galarneau, who is the son-in-law of Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler, is due back in court on May 1.
The case has drawn attention as it follows a similar incident involving a former Cohoes High School teacher aide, Alexsandra Morales, who was charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student last year. The school district is working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of its students.
