An Albany man, Savion Wimberly, is facing multiple charges for his alleged role in a deadly shooting that occurred after the July 4 fireworks show in Albany. The incident resulted in the death of 17-year-old Vance Mims III, who succumbed to his injuries after spending two weeks in the hospital.
Wimberly, 24, was arraigned on Thursday (April 9) in Albany County Court, where Judge Andra Ackerman unsealed a superseding indictment charging him with six crimes, including second-degree murder, first-degree conspiracy, and criminal possession of a weapon. According to Times Union, he is accused of being a "driving force" in the shooting.
The shooting involved two 16-year-olds, who have also been charged. One of the teens, who was 15 at the time, allegedly fired the fatal shot and faces charges of second-degree murder and other related offenses. The other teen is accused of firing a flare gun, which caused a fire that destroyed two homes. Both teens are currently held at the Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility, while Wimberly is in Albany County Correctional Facility without bail, as reported by Yahoo News.
The shooting was part of a series of violent incidents that took place over the July 4 weekend in Albany. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be pursued, according to the Albany County District Attorney's office.
