The New York State Office of General Services (OGS) is notifying drivers about lane diversions starting today (April 13) in Albany. These diversions will affect the eastbound arterial roadway connecting the Empire State Plaza to Interstate 787 and Routes 9 and 20, as part of a multi-year repair project.

According to OGS, the project aims to replace aging infrastructure, including expansion joints, and address water infiltration issues that have compromised the structural integrity of the road. The repairs, which are estimated to cost $12 million, will improve safety and long-term infrastructure.

Bridget O'Hanlon, the deputy commissioner for design and construction at OGS, explained that the diversion will remain in place until the end of the year and will pause for the winter. The work will resume in spring 2026, with another diversion affecting westbound lanes next summer.

Drivers will still have access to all parking beneath the plaza and the "mouse hole" exit onto Madison Avenue. Access to Interstate 787 and state routes 9 and 20 will not be impeded. O'Hanlon noted that there might be temporary delays as drivers adjust to the new traffic patterns.

The main phase of the project is expected to conclude by the end of 2026, with site restoration completed by 2027. For updates on future diversions, drivers are encouraged to check the OGS website.
