A tragic incident unfolded in Johnstown on Wednesday (April 22) when a police chase ended in a fatal crash on State Route 30A. According to NEWS10 ABC, the crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. when a vehicle being pursued by Johnstown Police crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. The driver of the pursued vehicle died at the scene, while the tractor-trailer driver remained unharmed.
The New York State Police have taken over the investigation at the request of the Johnstown Police Department. As of now, officials have not disclosed the reason behind the initial police pursuit. The crash led to the closure of Route 30A between Glebe and South Melcher Streets for collision reconstruction.
Eyewitness Bob Kumpan, a resident living nearby, described the scene to NEWS10, stating, "I heard a big bang and then sirens. When I went outside, I saw black smoke and a car engulfed in flames." He noted that the area frequently sees tractor-trailer traffic, but he had never witnessed an accident of this magnitude.
The Times Union reported that the driver who died was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited regarding the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
