A Troy man, Michael Williams, 32, has been convicted of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in a case stemming from the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative. The conviction followed a week-long trial, as announced by the Rensselaer County District Attorney's Office.
Williams was found with a loaded Glock 42 during a routine GIVE detail conducted by the Parole Division of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, in collaboration with the Troy Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and County Probation. As a persistent violent felony offender, Williams faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life, with sentencing scheduled for July 1 by Judge Young.
The GIVE initiative, supported by an annual grant awarded to select cities across New York State, aims to reduce gun violence by removing illegal firearms from the streets. District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, "Another example of this team's efforts to remove illegal guns from the streets of Troy and from violent offenders." The case was prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Tim Feenan and Assistant District Attorney Nora Baker.
The conviction highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies in Troy to combat illegal firearm activity and hold offenders accountable. Williams' conviction is expected to face legal challenges, but the collaborative efforts of local agencies continue to focus on community safety.
