Sentencing for Albany Bat Attack

An Albany man sentenced to 15 years in prison after a jury finds him guilty of a brutal attack.

District Attorney David Soares says 41 year old Derek Coppins repeatedly hit a man with a baseball bat while on a sidewalk on Ramo Street just before midnight on January 25, 2016.  The victim survived, but with severe injuries to his head and arm.  The victim needed surgery to repair damage to his broken arm, including the insertion of a metal plate.  What's more, the D.A. says Coppins made repeated telephone calls to an eye witness in an attempt to prevent her from testifying.

A jury found Coppins guilty of one count of Attempted Assault,  one count of Assault, and one count of Tampering with a Witness.
