Husband Sentenced to 20 Years to Life for Killing Wife over Lighter

He said he loved her and she was his best friend, but that did not prevent Michael Norton from taking an axe to his wife Sherry, striking and killing her.

On May 2nd of last year, the Hadley man murdered his wife because she was using his cigarette lighter and he wanted it back.

Saratoga County Judge Jim Murphy sentenced Norton to 20 years to life in prison, after he plead guilty to second degree murder.

Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen told News Channel 13 that she really feels sorry for the couple's daughter.

"And the tragic result is now someone is going to prison for the rest of their life, a young 20-year-old woman is forever without both of her parents and her life, and that, to us, is why we commit ourselves to the work we do each and every day."

Heggen adds Norton had one previous arrest for reckless endangerment, after he shot a gun off inside his home.

Norton spoke at his sentencing.

"It's all on me, it's all my fault, I did it, okay? It has nothing to do with anything, it's me."
