Pentagon Announces Identity of Vietnam War-era Airman

Using D.N.A. and dental records, the Pentagon is announcing the identity of an Airman from our area.

32-year-old Richard Kibbey was killed in the Vietnam War, when the helicopter he was in was shot down during a rescue mission behind enemy lines in North Vietnam.

The Delmar native and three other crew members of a rescue and recovery squad were sent to North Vietnam to rescue a downed American pilot.

After rescuing the pilot, the helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, exploded, then crashed.

Kibbey, the rescued pilot, and two helicopter crew members were killed.

One crew member was rescued.

In March of last year, Vietnamese officials excavated the crash site, and recovered human remains.
