Ellis Hospital Patient Charged with Stabbing Nurses

A patient at Eliis Hospital in Schenectady is accused of stabbing three hospital employees and a nursing student with medical scissors. According to the Daily Gazette, hospital officials say it happened Thursday just before 8:00am and that the patient stabbed two registered nurses and one student nurse. One nurse was stabbed in the left ear, another was stabbed in the upper back and neck, and the student nurse suffered a wound to her neck.

The patient is identified as 27-year-old Ian Castaldo and he's now facing five felony counts of 2nd degree assault, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.

The charges were elevated to felonies based on Castaldo having been previously convicted of a crime. He was ordered held on $10,000 bond which he has posted.

The injured hospital employees were treated and sent home.
