Governor Kathy Hochul has given the thumbs up to boosting overtime pay for workers at three state run hospitals, in a bid to slow staffing shortages.

Workers at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, Stony Brook and Upstate University hospitals can now get double time and a half for each hour they work over 40 hours in a week. State hospitals have faced staffing shortages amid the pandemic. The bid to hold onto workers could get a bit tougher come Monday, when a COVID vaccine mandate goes into effect for all hospital workers. Some workers say they would rather quit than get the shot.
