Friends of Recovery-New York (FOR-NY) has long been doing work to support people through their individual Recovery from substance abuse but as time as passed, the definition of what Recovery means has changed. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Diane Donato talks with Dr. Angelia Smith Wilson, Executive Director of Friends of Recovery- New York, about why that definition has changed and how changing the meaning of Recovery is enlarging the number of people who can be helped. Dr. Smith Wilson says that while there are still clinically based stages of Recovery, there is a greater understanding that when individuals define what Recovery means for themselves, they have a greater chance of being successful. Still, she says community support systems are essential. Allison Weingarten, Director of Policy, also joins in to talk about Stand Up for Recovery Day.
