Members of the Schenectady City Council have voted to move forward with a plan to have more community engagement officers in schools.

There will now be up to six of those officers who will work on a full-time basis. Mayor Gary McCarthy said during a meeting Monday night he thinks it'll be a good thing to have officers in schools who are familiar with students. But opponents argued police shouldn't be in schools because it could traumatize students. The cost of this program will be divided equally between the school district and city.
