A garbage truck driver in Schenectady, New York, has been arrested and fired from his job after allegedly hitting a co-worker while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on the morning of November 26, 2024, when 51-year-old Robert Thomas was backing up the truck and struck a fellow worker who was loading trash into the rear compartment. The impact temporarily pinned the worker between the vehicle and a pole.
The injured worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to Albany Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He is currently recuperating at the hospital.
According to the Daily Gazette, officers determined that Thomas was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors, and a violation for backing unsafely.
Thomas was released on appearance tickets and is no longer employed by the City of Schenectady. The incident is still under investigation.
