Watervliet officials have issued a warning to residents after a drone captured images of two bears in a wooded area near St. Peter Armenian Church on Tuesday (December 10). The Watervliet Police Department was conducting a training exercise using a thermal imaging drone when the bears were spotted.

Bear sightings are not uncommon in the area, but officials urge residents to take precautions to avoid encounters. The police recommend securing garbage, removing bird feeders, cleaning grills thoroughly, and keeping pet food indoors. Residents should also keep pets on leashes when outside.

If a bear is encountered, authorities advise backing away slowly, raising arms to appear larger, and speaking in a calm, firm tone. Residents are encouraged to report any bear sightings to the police.

Bears typically begin hibernating in late November, but they may remain active if the weather is mild or if they are disturbed. The Watervliet Police Department will provide updates as necessary.
