With Christmas approaching, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection and Attorney General Letitia James have shared tips to help residents avoid package theft. As holiday shopping increases, so does the risk of packages being stolen from doorsteps.

To protect deliveries, the Department of Consumer Protection suggests signing up for package tracking services to know when packages will arrive. Scheduling deliveries for times when someone is home can also help prevent theft. Additionally, using security or doorbell cameras can provide footage to share with police if a package is stolen.

Attorney General James emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising New Yorkers to use services like USPS Informed Delivery, FedEx Delivery Manager, and UPS My Choice for tracking packages. She also recommends using USPS Smart Lockers or Hold Mail Service if no one is available to receive the package.

If theft occurs, residents should contact local law enforcement and report the incident to the Postal Inspection Service.
