Due to the anticipated bitter cold temperatures, a Code Blue has been declared in Albany and Schenectady counties. The declaration is aimed at providing shelter and warmth to those in need during the harsh winter weather. In Schenectady County, the Code Blue is already in effect and will expire at 7 p.m. on Friday (January 5). During this period, homeless shelters will extend their hours to offer aid. Facilities such as Bethesda House, Bridges of NY, and the City Mission of Schenectady are among those providing extended services.
In Albany County, the Code Blue will remain in effect through Sunday (January 7). Warming centers are available at various locations, including South Ferry Street, South Swan Street, and South Pearl Street. Residents in need of shelter in Albany County can also contact the HATAS Homeless Hotline at (518) 463-2124 for assistance.
According to News10, the Code Blue initiative ensures that no one has to face the winter cold alone. Schenectady County has worked with providers to create additional Code Blue beds over the years to accommodate more people when temperatures drop below freezing. Schenectady County Legislator Michelle Ostrelich emphasized the importance of protecting oneself and family from cold weather-related injuries, such as hypothermia and frostbite.
Schenectady County has created a network of safe, warm spaces available for residents when temperatures drop below freezing.
