An Albany police officer shot Luis Rivera, 39, during a domestic dispute on Sunday (January 5) on Third Avenue. The incident began when a 20-year-old reported that Rivera was threatening his mother with a gun. Officers arrived at the scene and found Rivera agitated and non-compliant. According to Police Chief Brendan Cox, Rivera assumed a "shooter stance," prompting Officer Daniel Blossom to fire his weapon. Rivera was shot in the upper thigh and is expected to survive.

Rivera was unarmed at the time of the shooting, though a loaded handgun was later found in the apartment. Rivera, who is on federal probation for a previous firearms charge, faces multiple charges, including attempted assault and menacing.

The officer involved, Daniel Blossom, has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. The Albany Police Department has reached out to the state Attorney General's office for a potential review of the incident.

News10 reports that Rivera allegedly wanted the police to take his life. The investigation is ongoing, with more video footage to be reviewed.
