New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a series of affordability proposals during her State of the State address on Tuesday (January 14) in Albany. The governor outlined plans to cut income taxes for middle-class New Yorkers, introduce an inflation refund, and expand the child tax credit. Hochul aims to lower middle-class taxes to their lowest level in nearly seven decades and provide financial relief through a first-ever inflation refund of up to $500. Additionally, she proposed expanding the child tax credit and providing free meals for millions of K through 12 students.

Hochul also emphasized the need for more childcare facilities and set a goal for universal childcare. Her proposals include building new housing, offering down-payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, and providing free tuition at State University of New York (SUNY) and City University of New York (CUNY) for adult students pursuing in-demand careers.

In a bid to enhance public safety, Hochul plans to partner with New York City to increase police presence in the subway system and invest in safety upgrades, such as platform barriers. She also announced the 'Unplug and Play' initiative to encourage children to be more active and reduce screen time.

Hochul's agenda will be subject to debate and approval in the state Legislature, which is controlled by Democrats. The governor's proposals come as she prepares for a challenging reelection campaign, with potential Democratic primary challengers and Republican contenders already emerging. Her plans aim to address economic concerns and improve the quality of life for New Yorkers, as she seeks to make the state more livable and affordable.
