New Yorkers can now file their state and federal tax returns for free using the Direct File program. This program allows eligible taxpayers to submit their returns online without any cost. It is estimated that over three million people will take advantage of this offer by using their smartphones or laptops.
The Direct File program is designed to be user-friendly and accessible from various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, 98% of users were satisfied with their experience last year. The program will soon be available in Spanish, making it even more accessible.
To qualify for Direct File, individuals must have earned less than $200,000 in 2024, or $250,000 for joint filers. Those who meet these criteria can use the IRS Direct File to file their federal return and then seamlessly export their information to complete their New York State return. More details can be found on the New York State Tax Department's website.
The deadline for filing tax returns is April 15 (Tuesday). For those who do not qualify for Direct File, other free options are available to e-file federal and state income tax returns. For assistance, taxpayers can contact the New York State Tax Department at 518-788-9668, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
