General Motors (GM) is recalling 721,000 vehicles worldwide due to potential engine issues that could lead to power loss or engine failure. The recall affects 2021 through 2024 model-year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles with 6.2L V8 gas engines. Approximately 598,000 of the affected vehicles are in the United States.
The issue involves manufacturing defects in the crankshaft and connecting rods of the 6.2-liter V-8 engines, which could result in engine damage. GM has issued a stop-sale order for affected vehicles still in dealer inventory. GM will inspect the engines of recalled vehicles. If they pass inspection, dealers will replace the oil filter and cap and add higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil. Engines that do not pass inspection will be repaired or replaced.
The recall follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after receiving 39 complaints about engine failures. GM identified 12 crashes and 12 injuries in the United States potentially linked to the engine issue.
Gary Johnson, who owns a 2023 GMC Sierra pickup truck, told KSTP, that he was driving at 65 mph when his engine failed.
“It was scary as hell. I am going to be honest,” Johnson told the news station.
"Anything could have happened. I guess I am lucky, you know, that I wasn’t trying to pass somebody, with somebody coming towards me," he added.
For more information, affected vehicle owners can contact their local GM dealers.
