Newly acquired Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris' injury situation is being described as "extremely strange" by Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
"Everything about the Najee Harris eye injury has been strange. Everything. I hope he fully recovers and plays this season. But everything about the situation has been extremely strange," Florio wrote on the Pro Football Talk X account.
Harris is expected to start training camp on the non-football injury/illness list after a Fourth of July fireworks accident, general manager Joe Hortiz told reporters on Wednesday (July 16).
"Nothing is set in stone," Hortiz said via Chargers.com.
Harris, 27, a native of Martinez, California, stayed in the Bay Area as veterans reported to training camp Wednesday morning, continuing treatment with doctors at Stanford. The former University of Alabama standout would be forced to miss at least four games of the 2025 NFL season if he ends up on the NFI list and isn't cleared before the final cuts of training camp.
The accident reportedly resulted in multiple people suffering injuries, including Harris' friend who was reported to have lost fingers. Harris' agent, Doug Hendrickson, had previously shared a statement last week claiming the injury was "superficial" and that the running back was "fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season."
Harris signed a one-year, $9.25 million deal, which includes a $3.75 million signing bonus and $1.5 million base salary, to join the Chargers this offseason. The 27-year-old spent his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, having recorded more than 1,000 yards each year, which included rushing for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns on 263 attempts in 2024.
