A bill designed to enhance safety near schools in Schenectady is awaiting the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul. Proposed by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, the legislation authorizes a pilot program to install speed cameras in up to 20 school zones in the city. The program aims to assess the effectiveness of speed cameras in reducing traffic violations and enhancing child safety over a five-year period.

The bill has already passed through state lawmakers and is now at the governor's desk for final approval. If signed, the program will run until December 31, 2030, after which its impact will be evaluated.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of children in school zones by monitoring and controlling vehicle speeds. However, there is no indication yet whether Governor Hochul will sign the bill into law.

Assemblyman Santabarbara has been actively advocating for this measure, emphasizing its potential to protect children and improve safety in school zones. The bill has garnered attention as part of ongoing discussions about traffic safety and the use of technology to enforce speed limits.

As the community awaits the governor's decision, the program's potential benefits and implications for traffic enforcement remain a topic of interest and debate among local residents and officials.
