A fugitive father, Thomas Phillips, was shot dead by police in New Zealand on Monday (September 8) after hiding with his three children in the wilderness for nearly four years. The children, aged nine, 10, and 12, are now in police custody, ending a nationwide manhunt that began in December 2021.

The incident unfolded when police responded to a robbery at a commercial property in Piopio, a small town on New Zealand's North Island. Phillips and one of his children were spotted on a quad bike, leading to a police chase. According to BBC News, the chase ended when the bike hit road spikes, and Phillips opened fire, injuring a police officer. Another officer then shot Phillips, who died at the scene.

The other two children were later found at a remote campsite in the dense bush of the Waikato region. They were unharmed and are now receiving medical checks. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers confirmed that the children are safe and being cared for by police.

Phillips had been evading capture since losing legal custody of his children. He was known for his survival skills, which allowed him to live off-grid. Despite multiple sightings and appeals for help, Phillips and his children remained elusive. The case captivated New Zealand, with each new development making headlines.

The children's mother, known as Cat, expressed relief that the ordeal had ended but was saddened by the outcome. She told CNN that she missed her children dearly and hoped for a peaceful resolution.

Prime Minister Chris Luxon described the event as "sad and absolutely tragic," echoing the sentiments of many New Zealanders. The police officer injured in the confrontation is undergoing surgery and is expected to survive.

The incident has raised questions about how Phillips managed to evade capture for so long and whether he received assistance from the local community. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure the children's well-being and address the legal ramifications of Phillips' actions.
