A tremendous job again this year by the Queensbury High School hockey team. For the 9th straight year, they yet again pulled off another great "Pink the Rink" event. The kids raise big money and present their pink hockey jerseys to those they'll be playing in honor-or-memory of.
Connie Himes, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, was honored. For the record, Queensbury beat LaSalle 6-0 in Glens Falls. Also for the record, and more importantly, over the last nine years "Pink the Rink" has raised more than $70,000 for its recipients.
A woman had been struggling for years to pay off her student loans. Her son, is apparently quite the gamer and has been winning fortnight tournament after tournament. He is now a professional gamer and has won enough money playing video games, that he is now paying off his mom's loans. While he hasn't said exactly how much the student loans are, he has an estimated $160,000 in winnings so far.
Another kid is helping his parents, thanking them for taking such good care of him. He was adopted as a baby by a poor couple in the Philippines. They gave him everything they had. He says he was lucky if they got two meals a day while they lived in a 200 square foot apartment.
He studied hard and vowed to care of his parents when he grew up.
True to his word, he has been successful in the insurance industry and just built them a luxurious, seven bedroom dream home. He also takes them on trips around the world and spends as much time with them as possible.
Finally, there was a homeless veteran who seemed to know everyone in town. He recently passed away but had no family. So, a police officer contacted some local veterans organizations and set up a funeral, with full honors and burial at Jacksonville National Cemetery. The officer invited the public and when the army vet was laid to rest, dozens of strangers were there to pay their respects.
The officer who stepped up and planned the whole thing says getting him to a national cemetery with military honors was the least he could do.
