Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Miracle on The Hudson.
The incident happened when a flock of geese caused both engines to go out on a jetliner. It forced the plane to make an emergency landing in New York City.
Ferry captains sprung into action, ultimately saving 143 of the plane's passengers. The remaining 12 also got to safety and survived. Captain "Sully" Sullenberger is remembered as a hero for his quick thinking and expert piloting on that January day. His is a story that was retold in a movie starring Tom Hanks, who played Sullenberger.
NY Waterways performs drills constantly for possible water rescues and other emergencies. They memorably ferried tens-of-thousands of people back to New Jersey during both 9/11 and after the blackout of August 2003.
