Doug's Blog: Trump's Impeachment Lawyer's Bizarre Performance

Am I the only one who feels cheated that Donald Trump couldn’t be on Twitter while his impeachment lawyer Bruce Castor Jr. was making his opening statement? Holy smokes, what was that? He started by commending the other side for its well-done presentation (Trump probably kicked his TV over right then), he then legitimized the election by saying the voters turned Trump out of office (the spit take Trump must have done upon hearing that!), and then he commended the Senators in the room for being very good at constituent relations (WTH???) I am no fan of late night comedian Trevor Noah, but he summed up Castor’s performance perfectly: Trump’s lawyer is giving the speech you give when you have to stall because the actual lawyer is stuck in traffic.

Bingo. I understand that Bruce is new to the defense team, and he’s only had a week to prepare, but the arguments we thought he was going to make aren’t hard - unconstitutional, no longer President, never told them to break the law, etc. Instead, Castor sounded like someone who was forced to give a book report about a book he hadn’t yet read (to steal another line from twitter.)

Was the Dem video in its opening argument effective? Yes it was. But there is little the Dems can/will do to change any Republican Senator’s minds at this point. However, a few more performances like that by Trump’s lawyers and who knows? Yeesh.
