If there was an award for the “world’s worst timing,” it would go to the guy who just bought Tom Brady’s last touchdown ball for over $500K on Saturday. Sunday night’s announcement of Brady’s un-retirement has made that “historic” ball essentially worthless. There’s hope for the buyer, though. Sports auction experts say it’s “likely” the buyer hasn’t wired the funds yet, and “auction houses typically invoice for weekend auctions on Monday.” Currently, Lelands Auction House has “no comment” on the issue. However, their description of the ball for sale called it a “historic” piece of sports history, and the final touchdown ball of Tom Brady’s career.” That doesn’t mean the auction house did anything wrong by committing any kind of fraud, but the bad press they’d get fighting the buyer if they backed out of the deal would probably not be worth it. That said, there’s no real precedent for this, so get some popcorn, sitting back, and watching to see what happens is the best bet here.
